While food, culture, and language can be different wherever we go, one thing is nearly constant, the need for caffeine! But while many different nations and regions love the taste of a finely brewed coffee, not all cups of joe are the same from place to place. Whether you are an eager traveler or just in the mood to explore some unique and novel takes on coffee, we have a list for you. So, let's go on a coffee tour around the world, no passport necessary!
Hong Kong's Yuanyang
Starting in Hong Kong, the fabulous locale famous for its skyline and martial arts films also has a keen cup of coffee. What's so special about it? Well, it goes where no coffee has gone before. Tea. That's right, the Yuanyang's name refers to the harmonious pairing of mandarin ducks, symbols of marital fidelity and cooperation between opposites. Or at least starkly different things. The drink combines milk tea, with its thick and rich supply of strong black tea and coffee into a truly harmonious combination. This is also enjoyed in other areas around southern China and Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia.
Vietnam's Ca Phe Trung
Moving a little bit further south in Asia, we have Vietnam. Vietnam's status as a coffee powerhouse in both bean production and coffee preparation cannot be understated. And while we have chosen the highly novel Ca phe trung, the other varieties of Vietnamese coffee are without a doubt worth a try. The standard mode of coffee preparation in Vietnam sees powerful robusta beans brewed from tin filters that sit atop glass cups. Usually, the coffee drips onto a layer of condensed milk and offers up a sweet, refreshing, and one-of-a-kind coffee experience. Now take this up a notch by adding some egg! The ca phe trung is a smooth, rich, refreshing, and silky beverage. For those worried this may just be a tourist trap or a gimmick, it's not, it’s an innervating cup of coffee that is certainly worth a cup or two!
Turkey's turk kahvesi
When compiling a list of international coffee, turk kahvesi is a must. Before France's cafe au lait, or Italy's espresso, or even Austria with its many different confectionary modes of coffee, the Ottoman empire's coffee was first and supreme in Europe and certainly a force to be reckoned with in coffee-drinking Asia and North Africa. Turk Kahvesi is also unique due to its interesting brewing method. Using large brass or copper pots better known as cezves, the grounds are served right in the coffee in ornate and special cups. Not only that but special sugar and sometimes even cardamom are added to enhance your coffee's flavor. And those grounds settled at the bottom of your cup? All part of the experience with fortune-tellers specialized in reading them!
Finland's Kaffeost
Heading far to the north, we have this novel take on coffee. Mixing coffee and dairy is nothing new or different, with cream and milk being mainstays of coffee culture in most parts of the world. But in Finland and some parts of Sweden, cheese is the dairy addition of choice! The cheese itself isn't a big chunk of orange cheddar, no it is a special, smooth, and soft cheese that can be enjoyed on its own, too!
Senegal's Cafe Touba
This mode of coffee perfected in the 1800s and named after a sacred city was devised to maximize coffee's medicinal properties. The drink's originator, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba added Guinea pepper and cloves to coffee to make this sweet and certainly spicy drink, one which was believed to better our health. It caught on and has become a popular mode of coffee, not just Senegal but other parts of Africa and the world, too!
Coffee Around the Globe
Coffee is a wonderful drink. And a universal one, too! But the way different countries and regions do coffee are all unique and worthy of admiration and praise. And a first-hand experience is a must with these novel and amazing takes on coffee!
